New cocktail bar to be friendly, ‘inclusive’ hangout
A new, welcoming and inclusive cocktail bar.Jane Jane, will open at Liz on 14th Street in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington in the fall. Three hospitality veterans, Jean Paul (J.P.) Sabatier, Ralph Brabham and Drew Porterfield, who are also friends, are set to debut a 30-seat cocktail bar in the historic building that houses the mixed-use development. Identifying as LGBTQ, the owners are comfortable with Liz as the perfect spot for this soon-to-be friendly and inviting neighborhood hangout. Sabatier, a Zagat “30 under 30,” is set to helm the bar and manage the cocktail program.
Expect a leaning toward Southern snack-centric fare and “well-crafted classic cocktails,” as the ownership group announced. Brabham and Porterfield hail from North Carolina and have been fixtures in the hospitality industry for a decade. They own Beau Thai and BKK Cookshop. A pop-up they created, Dot’s Spot, did well when they ran it on the patio of BKK Cookshop three years ago and is providing inspiration for Jane Jane.
The Edit Lab at Streetsense will create the right design to make the most of the Liz space. Expect to see warm woods and bold colors. With a wrapped leather bar as a focal point, the space also offers “tucked-away” booths for groups to socialize and make the most of a night out. The restaurant’s ambiance will also draw energy from the massive windows and provide comfortable, outdoor seating.
Brabham’s mother, whose nickname is“Jane Jane” is the story behind the bar’s name. The Boulevardier–a favorite of Brabham’s, which Sabatier introduced to him years ago. a favorite of Brabham’s, which Sabatier introduced to him years ago—is slated to be part of the cocktail menu.
Jane Jane currently provides cocktail service to residents of Liz and will expand delivery service in the near future. Leading up to the grand opening, DC-area residents will see pop-ups that will tease future guests with sips and tastes, representing what the new cocktail bar and lounge will offer.
Sabatier, Brabham and Porterfieldare are working on enhanced safety & sanitation practices as they ready the opening. They are also brainstorming new ways to maximize the space during the pandemic and to offer more ways to serve the community while social-distancing.
