Washington dining favorites like Commissary, Gravitas reopen for takeout biz

As the District of Columbia, surrounding suburbs prepare to reopen dining rooms, local favorties find their groove

As states lift stay-at-home orders and some restrictions that have kept dining rooms closed, Washington, D.C., too is also preparing to enter Phase One. As that date approaches, D.C. restaurants are coming alive again as flowers bloom and we approach summer’s return. Commissary reopened Wednesday and offers a condensed menu, promising to expand it and return some of long-missed favorites as they offer takeout. Gravitas, too, which took a short, month-long “refresh” is also back.

The breakfast Southern Fried Chicken at Commissary, with buttermilk marinated chicken, sunny side egg, chipotle aioli, buttered brioche fries is available to-go. For lunch, the Sesame-Ginger Chicken Lettuce Wraps and Mambo Wings are must-try starters. The Crispy SkinSalmon for dinner is another raved-about option.

The hours of operation are Sunday to Thursday, Breakfast and lunch served from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; Dinner is from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Commissary serves breakfast from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; Dinner is from 3:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Customers can order delivery via third party, including Uber Eats, Caviar, Grubhub, and Postmates.

Gravitas, which placed as a finalist for the RAMMY Award for Formal Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year, has returned after a short break. “We’ve returned to our roots and will be offering a set four-course take-home tasting menu featuring inventive dishes like Moroccan chicken tagine and Maryland crab cakes,” said the owners in an email. Gravitas priced the tasting dinner at $48 per person, excluding tax and tip. Its tasting menu rotates daily.

The restaurant will open May 26 after the Memorial Day Holiday. Accompanying takeout drinks include bottles of wine, beer and carryout cocktails. For delivery, the restaurant is using Skip the Line (STL).
