La Cosecha, new luxury residences revitalize Union Market neighborhood

New, upcoming developments, Latin market create curb appeal for historic neighborhood

Union Market is fast-becoming a destination that reflects some of the exciting facets of restaurant and real estate development that is reshaping Washington, D.C. La Cosecha brings a Lain experiential food and retail marketplace like no other. Edens, the retail developer of La Cosecha, revealed some of the details when it announced the first set of stores and eateries to open early this year. Now, additional restaurants have been unveiled for the food hall + retail venue.

Union Market living transformed

Filos Bakery, Serena+Zumato (from the owners of La Colada), Café Unido, and La Casita are also coming to Latin Market La Cosecha, according to a report from DCist. Filos Bakery, which serves up German-Mexican treats at two farmers markets in the area, Petworth Farmers Market and Van Ness Farmers Markets, will open. The bakery also sells through the Made in DC shop, according to the report.

Serena+Zumato is a new eatery from Daniella Senior of La Colada. Focusing on breakfast toasts and juices in the early part of the day, the eatery will jazz it up at night with cocktails and snacks in Pan-Latin fashion.

The Panamanian chain Café Unido brings its first store to the United States. A Salvadorean Pupeseria from a family with several Salvadorean DMV-area restaurants will emerge in La Casita. Chef Iris Veronica Jimenez and her family will open yet another eatery —this one part of the collection of food gems at La Cosecha.

In this revitalizing NoMa neighborhood, residential capacity will be increased my multiples. Located just steps from Union Market, The Edison luxury apartment building has already opened at 1240 Fourth Street, featuring 187 units and top amenities, including a high-tech fitness center, keyless entry to apartments, reserved unerground parking, a ride-sharing service, as well as expansive views of D.C.

Another development across on N Street, Press House, will define much of the neighborhood’s landscape on the south-facing Florida Avenue corridor. Additionally, 1270 Fourth Street by Level 2 Development, is restoring warehouse facade to showcase retail and residential space.

The Batley: Level 2 Development

At 1270 Fourth Street, four jetting “volumes” of luxury apartment blocks will rise above retail space for a distinctive and prominent look. At The Batley, historic characteristics of the street-level facade will contrast with the modern residential building above. The four residential volumes will seem like they “float” above the restored exterior at the base, says developer Level 2.

A total of 432 residential units are expected in the 11-story building with a hefty presence in the neighborhood. Under construction, the building should deliver in the fall. Level 2 is also behind the 318-unit Highline at Union Market, another mixed-use complex that is currently under development.

Press House: Foulger-Pratt

Foulger-Pratt broke ground on the Press House in April. The project at 301 and 331 N Street includes the National Capital Press Building. The luxury residences at Press House will total 356. The building’s amenities will offer renters two plazas, rooftop green space, a clubroom, a fitness center, a business center, a dog-washing station and controlled-access bike storage.


Of the 356 residences, 31 units will be affordable units. Eleven of the units are two-bedroom units reserved for those making up to 50 percent of the area’s median income.

Press House serves as a mixed-used destination. In addition to the apartments, there will be 27K square feet of retail space and 25K square feet of office space. The residential units are located in two buildings that share a lobby and rooftop pool with grill space.

The development is just two blocks from the NoMa-Gallaudet Metro Station and less than half of a mile from Union Market. Phase II of Press House will add more residential or hotel space to a tune of 85K square feet later on. Torti Gallas + Partners was selected as the architect of record. Foulger-Pratt announced Rockwell Group as the interior designer.


Union Place: Toll Brothers

About a half-mile south, Union Place Luxury Residences opened up. Union Place was developed by a Toll Brothers subsidiary. Toll Brothers Apartment Living manages the property. Studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments will be available. These dwellings may not technically be in the Union Market neighborhood, but as part of the NoMa district, show the vitality and appeal of the area.

With close proximity to the H Street Corridor and access to more than 55 restaurants, an expansive Harris Teeter grocery store and REI, expect a lot of interest in Union Place, as well. The residences are within striking distance of Union Station Metro on the WMATA Red Line. The transit center at Union Station is home to the subway, commuter trains, local and regional buses, and Amtrak service.
