Riverdale Park Station Denizens Brewing opens

12,000 square-foot brewery + taproom latest anchor at Calvin Caffritz Enterprises’ mixed-use development

Denizens Brewing Co. is set to open the taproom at its second location at the Riverdale Park Station development in Hyattsville, Md. May 25. Boasting 150 seats, the 3,000 square-foot taproom is a much-anticipated addition to the community at Riverdale Park Station, where Denizens production facility and taproom will encompass a total of 12,000 square feet. Denizens Brewing has become a fixture of the South Silver Spring community, where it opened its first location in 2014.

The first phase of apartment residences at Riverdale Park Station will deliver in the first half of next year, bringing more beer lovers to the community and to Denizens Brewing. The Residences at Riverdale Park Station, one of at least three residential projects planned for Riverdale Park, are currently being built by Cushman & Wakefield, after it secured a $57M construction loan, according to a Washington Business Journal report. Located one mile south of the University of Maryland College Park Campus, Riverdale Park Station is a mixed-use, “town center” community by developer Calvin Caffritz Enterprises.

The residences at Riverdale Park Station will bring 229 apartments and 10,000 square feet of retail and 8,000 square feet of amenity space to the community, notes the report.

Denizens Brewing is the latest anchor tenant of the development, which already includes a Whole Foods Market, Gold’s Gym and Bella Lifestyle Nail Salon and Spa. Popular eateries on the premises include Burtons Grill, District Taco, Jersey Mike’s Subs, MOD Pizza, and The Habitat Burger. When Riverdale Park Station is completed, it will span 37 acres and offer 150,000 square feet of office space, 119 townhomes, 850 residential units, 20 square feet of office space, and a Hyatt Place hotel.

The additional production facility of the new Denizens in Hyattsville will add much needed capacity that the brewer needs. Julie Verratti, Denizens chief brand officer and co-founder, says the Silver Spring brewery has been at capacity for the last three years. Total production will increase by 15,000 barrels over the next 10 years at full capacity, said Verratti in an email to Swizzle Chill.

Many of the D.C.area’s restaurants and retailers carry Denizens beer, including including Nats Stadium, the Fillmore, Busboys and Poets, BlackSalt, MOM’s Organic Market, DC Reynolds, and Brookland’s Finest.

Looking for a repeat of Silver Spring, the Riverdale Park Station Denizens Brewing team expects the brewery and taproom to be a popular gathering place. Featuring a taproom with a full restaurant and cocktail bar, Denizens is set to offer local drafts, wines, and spirits.

The team has tapped Gaby Jones as general manager. She’ll lead service and hospitality in addition to the frontline teams as they welcome guests from all around the region and nearby Riverdale Park, Hyattsville, College Park, and University of Maryland neighborhoods. Executive Chef James Marroquin will head up the kitchen and ensure dishes at Riverdale Park Station reflect global influence, and its recipes use Denizens beer whenever possible.

In 2014, Emily Bruno, Jeff Ramirez, and Verratti co-founded Denizens Brewing Co., the only majority women and minority owned brewery in Maryland. Since then, Denizens has served over 100 unique styles of beer. Riverdale Park Station Denizens will offer Southside Rye IPA, Born Bohemian Pilsner, Third Party Tripel, and Lowest Lord ESB as its core portfolio.

“We are grateful for the support we have received from local residents to elected officials, and are excited to be fully immersed in the neighborhood,” said Bruno, Denizens Brewing co-founder and chief administration officer.
